As I experience the world, a natural phenomenon that I have explored is the tendency for things to tangle. This tendency exists as a crucial function in personal relationships as well as within our own bodies, such as the knotting of RNA, the entwining of intestines, and the folds of our brains. Defining what makes up a knot led me to break apart and analyze certain characteristics that create a bond that is difficult to break. Mostly made in fiber, my work creates a sensory experience that contains intersections, flexibility, and security that brings an awareness to the viewer’s own physicality. Fiber work also parallels the care and repetition necessary for the maintenance of a relationship that provides comfort and familiarity. I often use quilting within my work because quilts traditionally request community involvement yet also function as something very intimate. I enjoy this contradiction, finding a common ground between something that is bigger than the self and yet also something that is within the self. I’m still learning how to appreciate the struggle in my personal relationships, and I’m starting to recognize how this concept persists within myself and how I see this complicated, intricate world.
